The Poker Hall of Fame was established in 1979 by Benny Binion. It was originally housed at the Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas and intended to be a tourist attraction. The first class of inductees in 1979 included Johnny Moss, Nick Dandolos, Felton McCorquodale, Ren Winn, Sid Wyman, James Butler Hickok, and Edmond Hoyle. In 2004 when Caesars Entertainment acquired the rights to the WSOP they also acquired the Poker Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is now virtual, with the annual induction ceremonies held in conjunction with the WSOP.
The criteria for induction are as follows:
- A player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition
- Be a minimum of 40 years old at time of nomination
- Played for high stakes
- Played consistently well, gaining the respect of peers
- Stood the test of time
- Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.
